Not only the look of display labels need to be designed well, but the ability for the labels to change their display content automatically without constant user intervention, streamlines daily operations, frees up staff valuable time, eliminates human error from the process, resulting in a more timely and accurate display of product information that in turn improves customer service and satisfaction as well as cost savings for the business.

The design of label is crucial here because potentially two sets of very different pieces of information may need to be displayed on the same label. Generally the designer begins with the design layout that needs to accommodate the larger volume of data to be displayed and work backwards.

Having the template designed, the next step would be to set up trigger points that activate (ie. switch on/off) the information fields to be displayed. A good ESL system provides an easy to use GUI interface that makes the automation task even at the template level easy enough so that a user with a very limited knowledge or understanding of programming could design desirable and functional templates.

Display automation could also be achieved by scheduling events in advance and leveing it to the system to take care of display content at the required time of day.
